The People Around Him

What was it like to follow Jesus?

We must first understand the climate:

Israel occupied by Rome for 200 years.

             4 sects of Jews:

                        -  Essenes - based on perfection.

                        -  Zealots - Extremist right wing terrorists.

                        -  Pharisees - Committed to God & Law, exclusive.

                        -  Sadducees - Liberal humanists.

Luke 14:1-24 - The foundation of Jesus' life was acceptance.

How do we live like Jesus?

To be a follower of Jesus Christ, you must arrange your life around reaching others.

                Matthew 28:16-20         Acts 1:4-8

You are designed to administer God's grace in various ways.

                 I Peter 4:10-11

Temptation: My Own Prison

What was it like for Jesus to be human?

 Matthew 4:1-11

Do not confuse holiness with being over temptation.

                  James 1:13-15

To truly become a high priest, Jesus had to suffer.

                     Hebrews 2:10-18         Hebrews 4:14-16

He endured because his eyes were in the right spot.

                     Hebrews 12:1-2

What Is Temptation?

Our temptations are shortcuts to God given desires that can be
            fulfilled in God honoring ways.

                  James 1:13-14

Patience is the key, which is rooted in faith.

How Do We Overcome?

Hebrews 12:1-4    -    Keep our eyes in the right spot.

The Kingdom of God is Here

What was it like for Jesus to be human?

 Luke 4:14-21
It was into a world of darkness that Jesus came.

 Mark 1:14-15
"Good news" - was a political slogan of the day
Where does God fit in a world like this?
God found out what it was like to be human.

 John 14:12      Mark 11:22-25
We are given the chance to be like Him.
"Apollinarianism" - The belief that the only part
of Jesus that was human was his body.  However:

                               Hebrews 2:9-18
                               Romans 8:29
                               1 John 2:6

Will you repent and believe?

SWAT Notes

SWAT Notes for Sunday, February 28, 1999
"Theology of Holiness -- Part 3"

WHAT IS HOLINESS?
  • 1 Peter 1:15-16
  • 1 John 2:1
"What is Christian Perfection? The loving of God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. This implies that no wrong temper, none contrary to love, remains in the soul; and that all the thoughts, words, and actions are governed by pure love."
-- John Wesley
  • "Sanctification" is from Latin (sanctus): holy (facere): make
SOME OF GOD'S COMMANDS AND PROMISES TO MAKE US HOLY:
  • Ephesians 5:17-18
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:3
  • Hebrews 10:10
  • Isaiah 1:18
  • Ezekiel 36:25
  • Malachi 3:2-3
  • 2 Corinthians 7:1
  • Hebrews 6:1
  • Matthew 3:11-12
WHAT QUESTION THEN REMAINS?
  • The core question is how do I access this state of living?
  • AND...is it an actual state or merely a position?
  • It is accomplished by the cross
    • 1 John 1:7 - the blood of Jesus
  • It is effected by the Holy Spirit
    • Titus 3:5
    • 1 Peter 1:2
    • 2 Thessalonians 2:13
  • It is accessed by faith
    • Acts 15:9
    • Acts 26:18
AS TO THE REALITY OF THE STATE OF SANCTIFICATION:
  • Greek word "katharidzo" means to "literally purge, to purify, to remove dross, and eliminate all that is foreign."
    • Acts 15:9
    • 2 Corinthians 7:1
    • Titus 2:14
    • 1 John 1:7
  • Greek word "katargeo" means to "annul, to abolish, to put an end to, to cause to cease."
    • Romans 6:6
  • Greek word "thanatoo" means to "subdue, to kill, to destroy, to render extinct."
    • Romans 8:13
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
  • 1 John 1:8 - sin is still an issue.
  • Luke 4:1-13 and Hebrews 4:15 - Even Jesus, the most sanctified of us all was tempted.
DO YOU BELIEVE?
